Helsinki is the capital city of Finland as well as the country’s economical and political hub. There are approximately 1,3 million inhabitants in the greater Helsinki region – a figure that represents a quarter of the entire country’s population. Helsinki was founded in 1550, and it has been the capital city of independent Finland since 1917. 84% of the population speak Finnish as their mother tongue, 6% speak Swedish and 10% other languages. English is widely spoken.

Helsinki is easily reached by ferry from Stockholm and Tallinn, and by air from all over Europe.


Coming by train
Train is the comfortable and environmentally friendly way to travel to and in Finland. There are many connections from Turku harbour to Helsinki. The train track is 100 m from the arrival terminal. From the north, the biggest cities there are many trains to Helsinki daily. The average travelling time from Oulu is 7 hours, from Vaasa 4 hrs 30 min, Jyväskylä 3 hrs 30 min, Kuopio 4 hrs 30 min, Joensuu 5 hrs 50 min, Tampere 1 hr 30 min, Lahti 60 min, Lappeenranta 2 hrs 10 min and Riihimäki 45 min. Coming by plane
There are many direct flights to Helsinki Airport. Airport is located 18 km from the Stadion hostel. From the airport take Finnair bus to the city, ask the driver to drop you off by the Opera house and take 600 m walk to the hostel.
